All the people of Judah were overjoyed because of the oath, since they took the oath wholeheartedly. They took great pleasure in looking for the Lord, and he let them find him. So the Lord surrounded them with peace.

The king stood beside the pillar and made a promise to the Lord that he would follow the Lord and obey his commands, instructions, and laws with all his heart and soul. He confirmed the terms of the promise written in this book. And all the people joined in the promise.

People from every tribe of Israel who were determined to seek the Lord God of Israel followed the Levitical priests to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the Lord God of their ancestors.

He built fortified cities in Judah because the land had peace. There was no war during those years because the Lord gave him a time of peace.

So Asa told Judah, “Let’s build these cities and make walls around them with towers and doors that can be barred. We have dedicated our lives to him, and he has surrounded us with peace.” So they built the cities, and everything went well.

They made an agreement with one another to dedicate their lives to serving the Lord God of their ancestors with all their heart and soul.

Asa and the people swore their oath to the Lord with shouts, singing, and the blowing of trumpets and rams’ horns.

Azariah went to Asa and said to him, “Listen to me, Asa and all you men from Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with him. If you will dedicate your lives to serving him, he will accept you. But if you abandon him, he will abandon you.

But when they were in trouble, they turned to the Lord God of Israel. When they searched for him, he let them find him.

One nation crushed another nation; one city crushed another. God had tormented them with every kind of trouble.

However, you’ve done some good things: You’ve burned the Asherah poles in this country, and you’ve wholeheartedly dedicated your life to serving God.”

Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was peaceful, since his God surrounded him with peace.

Now I intend to make a pledge to the Lord God of Israel so that he may turn his burning anger away from us.

Hezekiah and all the people were overjoyed because of what God had done for the people. Everything had happened so quickly.

Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people told them, “This is a holy day for the Lord your God. Don’t mourn or cry.” All the people were crying as they listened to the reading of God’s Teachings.

If he keeps quiet, who can condemn him? If he hides his face, who can see him whether it is a nation or a single person?

I wholeheartedly searched for you. Do not let me wander away from your commandments.

I took an oath, and I will keep it. I took an oath to follow your regulations, which are based on your righteousness.

Your written instructions are mine forever. They are the joy of my heart.

Be glad and find joy in the Lord, you righteous people. Sing with joy, all whose motives are decent.

Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and legal decisions. Then all the people answered with one voice, “We will do everything the Lord has told us to do.”

⌞Wisdom’s⌟ ways are pleasant ways, and all its paths lead to peace.

Certainly, we wait with hope for you, O Lord, ⌞as we follow⌟ the path of your guiding principles. We want to remember you and your name.

I haven’t spoken privately or in some dark corner of the world. I didn’t say to Jacob’s descendants, “Search for me in vain!” I, the Lord, speak what is fair and say what is right.

We are proud that our conscience is clear. We are proud of the way that we have lived in this world. We have lived with a God-given holiness  and sincerity, especially toward you. It was not by human wisdom that we have lived but by God’s kindness.

Then you, the Levites, and the foreigners who live among you can enjoy all the good things which the Lord your God has given you and your family.

I find it hard to choose between the two. I would like to leave this life and be with Christ. That’s by far the better choice.

A long time afterward, the Lord gave the Israelites peace with all their enemies around them. Joshua was old, near the end of his life.

That day Joshua made an agreement for the people and set up laws and rules for them at Shechem.
