The king answered them harshly. He ignored the older leaders’ advice.

The king refused to listen to the people because the Lord was directing these events to carry out the promise he had made to Jeroboam (Nebat’s son) through Ahijah from Shiloh.

The thoughts of righteous people are fair. The advice of wicked people is treacherous.

Starting a quarrel is ⌞like⌟ opening a floodgate, so stop before the argument gets out of control.

How horrible it will be for any country where the king used to be a servant and where the high officials throw parties in the morning.

Who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? He will still have control over everything under the sun for which I worked so hard and used my wisdom. Even this is pointless.

The end of something is better than its beginning. It is better to be patient than arrogant.

All the officials, governors, satraps, advisers, and mayors agree that the king should make a statute and enforce a decree. The decree should state that for the next 30 days whoever asks for anything from any god or person except you, Your Majesty, will be thrown into a lions’ den.

But if you are bitterly jealous and filled with self-centered ambition, don’t brag. Don’t say that you are wise when it isn’t true.

They had tails and stingers like scorpions. They had the power to hurt people with their tails for five months.

Locusts came out of the smoke onto the earth, and they were given power like the power of earthly scorpions.

They were not allowed to kill them. They were only allowed to torture them for five months. Their torture was like the pain of a scorpion’s sting.
