God's Word

All slaves who believe must give complete respect to their own masters. In this way no one will speak evil of God’s name and what we teach.

The Messenger of the Lord said to her, “Go back to your owner, and place yourself under her authority.”

I was angry with my people. I dishonored those who belong to me. I put them under your control. You showed them no mercy. You placed a heavy burden on old people.

So what do I find here? asks the Lord. My people are taken away for no reason. Their rulers are screaming, declares the Lord. And my name is cursed all day long.

This is the kind of fasting I have chosen: Loosen the chains of wickedness, untie the straps of the yoke, let the oppressed go free, and break every yoke.

But wherever they went among the nations, they dishonored my holy name. People said about them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, yet they had to leave his land.’

“This is what the Lord of Armies says: A son honors his father, and a servant honors his master. So if I am a father, where is my honor? If I am a master, where is my respect? You priests despise my name. “But you ask, ‘How have we despised your name?’

because my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

“Really, what did you go to see? A prophet? Let me tell you that he is far more than a prophet.

Jesus told his disciples, “Situations that cause people to lose their faith are certain to arise. But how horrible it will be for the person who causes someone to lose his faith!

The men replied, “Cornelius, a Roman army officer, sent us. He’s a man who has God’s approval and who respects God. Also, the Jewish people respect him. A holy angel told him to summon you to his home to hear what you have to say.”

After saying this, the angel left. Cornelius called two of his household servants and a devout soldier, one of those who served him regularly.

So why are you testing God? You’re putting a burden on the disciples, a burden neither our ancestors nor we can carry.

As Scripture says, “God’s name is cursed among the nations because of you.”

Don’t cause others to stumble, whether they are Jewish, Greek, or members of God’s church.

Christ has freed us so that we may enjoy the benefits of freedom. Therefore, be firm ⌞in this freedom⌟, and don’t become slaves again.

So you will serve your enemies, whom the Lord will send against you. You will serve them even though you are already hungry, thirsty, naked, and in need of everything. The Lord will put a heavy burden of hard work on you until he destroys you.

So I want younger widows to marry, have children, manage their homes, and not give the enemy any chance to ridicule them.

to use good judgment, and to be morally pure. Also, tell them to teach young women to be homemakers, to be kind, and to place themselves under their husbands’ authority. Then no one can speak evil of God’s word.

Live decent lives among unbelievers. Then, although they ridicule you as if you were doing wrong while they are watching you do good things, they will praise God on the day he comes to help you.

Keep your conscience clear. Then those who treat the good Christian life you live with contempt will feel ashamed that they have ridiculed you.
