All people speak foolishly. They speak with flattering lips. They say one thing but mean another.

Nothing in their mouths is truthful. Destruction comes from their hearts. Their throats are open graves. They flatter with their tongues.

You let your mouth say anything evil. Your tongue plans deceit.

Your tongue makes up threats. It’s like a sharp razor, you master of deceit.

None of the priests may drink wine when they enter the inner courtyard.

“You and your sons must not drink any wine or liquor when you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a permanent law for generations to come.

Their throats are open graves. Their tongues practice deception. Their lips hide the venom of poisonous snakes.

A deacon must have only one wife. Deacons must manage their children and their families well.

A bishop must have a good reputation. He must have only one wife, be sober, use good judgment, be respectable, be hospitable, and be able to teach.

He must not drink excessively or be a violent person, but he must be gentle. He must not be quarrelsome or love money.

Stop drinking only water. Instead, drink a little wine for your stomach because you are frequently sick.

Because a bishop is a supervisor appointed by God, he must have a good reputation. He must not be a stubborn or irritable person. He must not drink too much or be a violent person. He must not use shameful ways to make money.

Tell older women to live their lives in a way that shows they are dedicated to God. Tell them not to be gossips or addicted to alcohol, but to be examples of virtue.

Praise and curses come from the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, this should not happen!

Be shepherds over the flock God has entrusted to you. Watch over it as God does: Don’t do this because you have to, but because you want to. Don’t do it out of greed, but out of a desire to serve.
