David finished talking to Saul. After that, Jonathan became David’s closest friend. He loved David as much as ⌞he loved⌟ himself.

“Our father’s life is wrapped up with the boy’s life. If I come ⌞home⌟ without the boy

I am heartbroken over you, my brother Jonathan. You were my great delight. Your love was more wonderful to me than the love of women.

David went to meet them. He told them, “If you’ve come to help me as friends would, then you may join me. But if you’ve come to betray me to my enemies, even though I haven’t committed a crime, may the God of our ancestors see this and judge you.”

Teach me your way, O Lord, so that I may live in your truth. Focus my heart on fearing you.

Friends can destroy one another, but a loving friend can stick closer than family.

Your own brother, son, or daughter, the wife you love, or your best friend may secretly tempt you, saying, “Let’s go worship other gods.” (Those gods may be gods that you and your ancestors never knew.

Because they are united in love, I work so that they may be encouraged by all the riches that come from a complete understanding of Christ. He is the mystery of God.

So all the men of Israel assembled. They stood united against the city.

The troops asked Saul, “Should Jonathan die after he has won this great victory in Israel? That would be unthinkable! We solemnly swear, as the Lord lives, not a single hair of his head will fall to the ground, because he has done this with God’s help today.” So the troops rescued Jonathan from death.

So Jonathan made a pledge of mutual loyalty with David because he loved him as much as ⌞he loved⌟ himself.

Saul told his son Jonathan and all his officers to kill David. But Saul’s son Jonathan was very fond of David,

so he reported to David, “My father Saul is trying to kill you. Please be careful tomorrow morning. Go into hiding, and stay out of sight.

Once again Jonathan swore an oath to David because of his love for David. He loved David as much as ⌞he loved⌟ himself.

Now, be kind to me. After all, you forced me into an agreement with the Lord. If I have committed any crime, kill me yourself. Why bother taking me to your father?”

All of you are plotting against me, and no one informed me when my son entered into a loyalty pledge with Jesse’s son. No one felt sorry for me and informed me that my son has encouraged my servant David to ambush me, as he’s doing now.”

Both of them made a pledge in the Lord’s presence. David stayed in Horesh, and Jonathan went home.
