Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard David talking to the men. Then Eliab became angry with David. “Why did you come here,” he asked him, “and with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how overconfident and headstrong you are. You came here just to see the battle.”

So his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept thinking about these things.

Then his brothers asked him, “Are you going to be our king or rule us?” They hated him even more for his dreams and his words.

Joseph’s brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them. They hated Joseph and couldn’t speak to him on friendly terms.

When his family heard about it, they went to get him. They said, “He’s out of his mind!”

Whatever these people don’t understand, they insult. Like animals, which are creatures of instinct, they use whatever they know to destroy themselves.

Pilate knew that they had handed Jesus over to him because they were jealous.

Then I saw that all hard work and skillful effort come from rivalry. Even this is pointless. ⌞It’s like⌟ trying to catch the wind.

Anger is cruel, and fury is overwhelming, but who can survive jealousy?

Malicious people bring charges against me. They ask me things I know nothing about.

Samuel took the flask of olive oil and anointed David in the presence of his brothers. The Lord’s Spirit came over David and stayed with him from that day on. Then Samuel left for Ramah.

But the Lord told Samuel, “Don’t look at his appearance or how tall he is, because I have rejected him. God does not see as humans see. Humans look at outward appearances, but the Lord looks into the heart.”

“What have I done now?” David snapped at him. “Didn’t I ⌞merely⌟ ask a question?”

Rehoboam married Mahalath, daughter of Jerimoth. (Jerimoth was the son of David and Abihail. Abihail was the daughter of Eliab, son of Jesse.)
