Israel’s soldiers were driven hard that day. Saul made the troops swear, “Cursed is anyone who eats food before the evening comes and before I’ve gotten revenge on my enemies.” So none of his troops tasted any food.

God gives me vengeance! He brings people under my authority.

With his talk a godless person can ruin his neighbor, but righteous people are rescued by knowledge.

People dedicated this way cannot be bought back. They must be put to death.

“If you hastily take a vow about what you will or will not do (as some people do) and then ignore it (although you know what you said), you will be guilty.

Then the Israelites made this vow to the Lord: “If you will hand these people over to us, we’ll destroy their cities because you’ve claimed them.”

may the Lord make you an example for your people to see what happens when the curse of this oath comes true: The Lord will make your uterus drop and your stomach swell.’ “Then the priest will administer the oath and the curse by saying:

I can assure you that they are deeply devoted to God, but they are misguided.

If anyone doesn’t love the Lord, let him be cursed! Our Lord, come!

At that time Joshua pronounced this curse: “The Lord will curse whoever comes to rebuild the city of Jericho. It will cost him his firstborn son to lay the foundation. It will cost him his youngest son to set up the city doors.”

When the Israelites were strong enough, they made the Canaanites do forced labor. But they did not force all of them out.

Praise the Lord! Men in Israel vowed to fight, and people volunteered for service.

The entire land had honeycombs, and there was honey on the ground.

I solemnly swear, as the Lord and Savior of Israel lives, even if it is my son Jonathan ⌞who did it⌟, he must die.” But not one of the soldiers replied.

Saul replied, “Tell David, ‘The king doesn’t want any payment for the bride except 100 Philistine foreskins so that he can get revenge on his enemies.’ ” In this way Saul planned to have David fall into the hands of the Philistines.
