And now, here is the king who will lead you. I am old and gray, but my sons are with you. I have led you from my youth until this day.

Even when I am old and gray, do not abandon me, O God. Let me live to tell the people of this age what your strength has accomplished, to tell about your power to all who will come.

My life is coming to an end, and it is now time for me to be poured out as a sacrifice to God.

A long time afterward, the Lord gave the Israelites peace with all their enemies around them. Joshua was old, near the end of his life.

So he called all the leaders, chiefs, judges, and officers of Israel together. He said to them, “I am old, near the end of my life.

I know that I will die soon. Our Lord Jesus Christ has made that clear to me.

Now, Eli was very old, and he had heard everything that his sons were doing to all Israel and that they were sleeping with the women who served at the gate of the tent of meeting.

Why do you show no respect for my sacrifices and grain offerings that I have commanded people to make in my dwelling place? Why do you honor your sons more than me by making yourselves fat on the best of all the sacrifices offered by my people Israel?

The Lord came and stood there. He called as he had called the other times: “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel replied, “Speak. I’m listening.”

I told him that I would hand down a permanent judgment against his household because he knew about his sons’ sin—that they were cursing God  —but he didn’t try to stop them.

Then Eli called Samuel. “Samuel, my son!” he said. “Here I am,” he responded.

When Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel.

Then we, too, will be like all the other nations. Our king will judge us, lead us out ⌞to war⌟, and fight our battles.”

The sons didn’t follow their father’s example but turned to dishonest ways of making money. They took bribes and denied people justice.

They told him, “You’re old, and your sons aren’t following your example. Now appoint a king to judge us so that we will be like all the other nations.”
