I will make my promise to you and your descendants for generations to come as an everlasting promise. I will be your God and the God of your descendants.

And yet, from long ago God has been my king, the one who has been victorious throughout the earth.

The Lord is our judge. The Lord is our lawgiver. The Lord is our king. The Lord is our savior.

Now, all the Jews who were in Moab, Ammon, Edom, and in all the other countries heard that the king of Babylon had left a few survivors in Judah and had appointed Gedaliah, son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan, to govern them.

“Where, now, is your king, the one who is supposed to save you? Where in all your cities are your judges? You said, ‘Give us kings and officials!’

He doesn’t want any trouble for the descendants of Jacob. He sees no misfortune for the people of Israel. The Lord their God is with them, praised as their king.

Gideon replied, “I will not rule you nor will my son. The Lord will rule you.”

But today you have attacked my father’s family. You have executed his 70 sons. You have made Abimelech, who is the son of my father’s slave girl, king over the citizens of Shechem just because he’s your brother.

But now you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your troubles and distresses. You said, ‘No! Place a king over us.’ Now then, stand in front of the Lord by your tribes and family groups.”

The sons didn’t follow their father’s example but turned to dishonest ways of making money. They took bribes and denied people justice.
