Joab reported the census figures to the king: In Israel there were 800,000 able-bodied men who could serve in the army, and in Judah there were 500,000.

King Joram immediately left Samaria to prepare Israel’s army for war.

The leaders of all Israel’s tribes took their places in the congregation of God’s people. There were 400,000 foot soldiers with swords.

They told the messengers who had come, “This is what you are to say to the men of Jabesh Gilead: ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun gets hot, you will be rescued.’ ” When the men of Jabesh received the message, they were overjoyed.

Samuel left Gilgal. The rest of the people followed Saul to meet the soldiers. They went from Gilgal  to Gibeah in Benjamin, where Saul counted the troops who were still with him—about 600 men.

Saul organized the troops, and he counted them at Telaim: 200,000 foot soldiers and 10,000 men from Judah.
