So Micaiah said, “I saw Israel’s troops scattered in the hills like sheep without a shepherd. The Lord said, ‘These ⌞sheep⌟ have no master. Let each one go home in peace.’ ”

The king asked him, “How many times must I make you take an oath in the Lord’s name to tell me nothing but the truth?”

They’ll be like hunted gazelle and like sheep with no one to gather them. Everyone will return to his own people and flee to his own land.

Long ago, the prophets who preceded you and me prophesied wars, disasters, and plagues against many countries and great kingdoms.

“The people of Israel are like scattered sheep that lions have chased. The first to devour them was the king of Assyria. The last to gnaw at their bones was King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.

My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray. They wander around on the mountains. They go from mountains to hills. They have forgotten their resting place.

As I looked, I saw a storm coming from the north. There was an immense cloud with flashing lightning surrounded by a bright light. The middle of the lightning looked like glowing metal.

Your shepherds, king of Assyria, have fallen into a deep sleep. Your best fighting men are at rest. Your people are scattered on the mountains, and there is no one to gather them.

The idols speak lies. The fortunetellers see false visions. They speak about false dreams. They give useless comfort. That is why people wander around like sheep. They are troubled because there is no shepherd.

“Arise, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is my friend,” declares the Lord of Armies. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. Then I will turn my hand against the little ones.”

and he delivered this message: “This is the message of Balaam, son of Beor. This is the message of the man whose eyesight is clear.

This is the message of the one who hears God’s words, has a vision from the Almighty, and falls ⌞into a trance⌟ with his eyes open:

who will lead them in and out ⌞of battle⌟ so that the Lord’s community will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”

When he saw the crowds, he felt sorry for them. They were troubled and helpless like sheep without a shepherd.

When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd and felt sorry for them. They were like sheep without a shepherd. So he spent a lot of time teaching them.

(Formerly in Israel, when a person went to ask God ⌞a question⌟, he would say, “Come, let’s go to the seer,” because a person we now call a prophet used to be called a seer.)
