His officers told him, “We have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful. Allow us to dress in sackcloth, put ropes around our necks, and go to the king of Israel. Maybe he’ll let you live.”

Then, to show his grief, Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth around his waist, and mourned for his son a long time.

Satan answered the Lord, “Skin for skin! Certainly, a man will give everything he has for his life.

I dressed myself in sackcloth, but I became the object of ridicule.

Mercy and truth protect a king, and with mercy he maintains his throne.

Then the Lord will set up a trusted king. He will rule faithfully. He is from the tent of David. He judges and searches for justice. He is quick to do what is right.

On that day the Almighty Lord of Armies will call for crying and for mourning, for shaving your heads and for wearing sackcloth.

When King Hezekiah heard the message, he tore his clothes in grief, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the Lord’s temple.

Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who can destroy both body and soul in hell.

I will allow my two witnesses who wear sackcloth to speak what God has revealed. They will speak for 1,260 days.”
