So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. The famine was particularly severe in Samaria.

If I go to the field, I see those killed because of war. If I go to the city, I see those sick because of famine. Prophets and priests wander through a land they haven’t heard of.

I alone am the one who comforts you. Why, then, are you afraid of mortals, who must die, of humans, who are like grass?

A wicked person flees when no one is chasing him, but righteous people are as bold as lions.

I have sinned against you, especially you. I have done what you consider evil. So you hand down justice when you speak, and you are blameless when you judge.

The Lord is my light and my salvation. Who is there to fear? The Lord is my life’s fortress. Who is there to be afraid of?

The shortages caused by the blockade of Samaria became so severe that a donkey’s head sold for two pounds of silver and a half-pint of dove  manure for two ounces of silver.

I will destroy your food supply. Ten women will need only one oven to prepare your food. You will eat and go away hungry.

A while later in the third year of the drought, the Lord spoke his word to Elijah: “Present yourself to Ahab. I will allow rain to fall on the ground.”

Ahab sent for Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. Obadiah was a devout worshiper of the Lord.

You will work hard for nothing because your land will produce no crops and the trees will produce no fruit.

This is what the Lord says: You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. Instead, you will die there.’ ” Then Elijah left.

All day long my enemies twist my words. Their every thought is an evil plan against me.
