The woman saw that the tree had fruit that was good to eat, nice to look at, and desirable for making someone wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.

The old prophet said, “I’m also a prophet, like you. An angel spoke the Lord’s word to me. He said, ‘Bring him home with you so that he may have something to eat and drink.’ ” (But the old prophet was lying.)

When they were sitting at the table, the Lord spoke his word to the old prophet who had brought back the man of God.

When the Lord spoke to me, he commanded me not to eat or drink or go back on the same road I took.”

Peter and John answered them, “Decide for yourselves whether God wants people to listen to you rather than to him.

One of your people, claiming to be a prophet or to have prophetic dreams, may predict a miraculous sign or an amazing thing.

The Lord your God is testing you to find out if you really love him with all your heart and with all your soul.

That prophet or dreamer must be put to death because he preached rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and freed you from slavery. He was trying to lead you away from following the directions the Lord your God gave you. You must get rid of this evil.

But any prophet who dares to say something in my name that I didn’t command him to say or who speaks in the name of other gods must die.”
