The Lord raised up Hadad the Edomite as a rival to Solomon. Hadad was from the Edomite royal family.

The Lord became angry with Israel again, so he provoked David to turn against Israel. He said, “Go, count Israel and Judah.”

I will be his Father, and he will be my Son. If he sins, I will punish him with a rod and with blows inflicted by people.

Then the God of Israel led King Pul of Assyria (King Tiglath Pilneser of Assyria) to take Reuben, Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh into captivity. He brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the Gozan River. They are still there today.

Then the Lord of Armies will raise his whip against them. As he struck down Midian at the Rock of Oreb and raised his staff over the water, so he will lift it as he did in Egypt.

“How horrible it will be for Assyria! It is the rod of my anger. My fury is the staff in the Assyrians’ hands.

I’m going to stir up the Medes against them. They don’t care for silver and aren’t happy with gold.

Edom will be conquered, and Seir, his enemy, will be conquered. So Israel will become wealthy.

Your Majesty, please listen to my words. If the Lord has turned you against me, let him be satisfied with an offering. But if mere mortals ⌞have turned you against me⌟, let them be cursed by the Lord. They have prevented me from having a share of the Lord’s inheritance. ‘Go and serve other gods,’ they tell me.
