Where is the wise person? Where is the scholar? Where is the persuasive speaker of our time? Hasn’t God turned the wisdom of the world into nonsense?

Then David was told, “Ahithophel is among those conspiring with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Lord, make Ahithophel’s advice foolish.”

In those days both David and Absalom thought that Ahithophel’s advice was like getting an answer from God.

Absalom and all the people of Israel said, “The advice of Hushai from Archi’s family is better than Ahithophel’s advice.” (The Lord had commanded Ahithophel’s good advice to be defeated in order to ruin Absalom.)

When Ahithophel saw that his advice hadn’t been followed, he saddled his donkey, left, and went home to his own city. He gave instructions to his family. Then he hanged himself, died, and was buried in his father’s tomb.

He leads counselors away barefoot and makes fools out of judges.

He makes trusted advisers unable to speak and takes away the good judgment of respected leaders.

He takes away the common sense of a country’s leaders and makes them stumble about in a pathless wilderness.

Your mind will be thinking of the terrors ⌞in the past⌟. Where are the scribes? Where are the tax collectors? Where are those who counted the towers?

I cause the signs of false prophets to fail and make fools of fortunetellers. I make wise men retreat and turn their knowledge into foolishness.

Who has believed our message? To whom has the Lord’s power been revealed?

Everyone fears you, O King of the Nations. This is what you deserve. No one is like you among all the wise people in the nations or in all their kingdoms.

The seed planted among thornbushes ⌞is another person who⌟ hears the word. But the worries of life and the deceitful pleasures of riches choke the word so that it can’t produce anything.

“This world is being judged now. The ruler of this world will be thrown out now.

Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers had discussions with him. Some asked, “What is this babbling fool trying to say?” Others said, “He seems to be speaking about foreign gods.” The philosophers said these things because Paul was telling the Good News about Jesus and saying that people would come back to life.

From the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly observed in what he made. As a result, people have no excuse.

While claiming to be wise, they became fools.

Scripture says, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise. I will reject the intelligence of intelligent people.”

Brothers and sisters, consider what you were when God called you to be Christians. Not many of you were wise from a human point of view. You were not in powerful positions or in the upper social classes.

But God chose what the world considers nonsense to put wise people to shame. God chose what the world considers weak to put what is strong to shame.

God chose what the world considers ordinary and what it despises—what it considers to be nothing—in order to destroy what it considers to be something.

But when the Lord judges us, he disciplines us so that we won’t be condemned along with the rest of the world.

However, we do use wisdom to speak to those who are mature. It is a wisdom that doesn’t belong to this world or to the rulers of this world who are in power today and gone tomorrow.

Not one of the rulers of this world has known it. If they had, they wouldn’t have crucified the Lord of glory.

Don’t deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise in the ways of this world, you should give up that wisdom in order to become really wise.

The wisdom of this world is nonsense in God’s sight. That’s why Scripture says, “God catches the wise in their cleverness.”

Don’t you know that God’s people will judge the world? So if you’re going to judge the world, aren’t you capable of judging insignificant cases?

You unfaithful people! Don’t you know that love for this ⌞evil⌟ world is hatred toward God? Whoever wants to be a friend of this world is an enemy of God.
