For the first time David entrusted Asaph and his relatives with the task of singing songs of thanks to the Lord:

David and the army commanders appointed the sons of Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun to serve as prophets with lyres, harps, and cymbals. This is the list of the men who performed this service:

From the sons of Asaph were Zaccur, Joseph, Nethaniah, and Asharelah. (They were directed by Asaph, who served as a prophet under the king’s direction.)

The following were the divisions of the gatekeepers: For Korah’s descendants there was Meshelemiah, the son of Kore, from the descendants of Asaph.

who was the son of Izhar, who was the son of Kohath, who was the son of Levi, who was the son of Israel.

who was the son of Michael, who was the son of Baaseiah, who was the son of Malchiah,

Then the Lord’s Spirit came to Jahaziel. (He was the son of Zechariah, grandson of Benaiah, great-grandson of Jeiel, whose father was Mattaniah, a Levite descended from Asaph.)

From Elizaphan’s descendants were Shimri and Jeiel. From Asaph’s descendants were Zechariah and Mattaniah.

Then King Hezekiah and the leaders told the Levites to praise the Lord with the words of David and the seer Asaph. They joyfully sang praises, bowed down, and worshiped.

The singers (Asaph’s descendants) were in their places as David, Asaph, Heman, and the king’s seer  Jeduthun had commanded. The gatekeepers were stationed at each gate. They didn’t need to leave their work, because their relatives, the Levites, prepared ⌞animals⌟ for them.

All the Levites who were musicians—Asaph, Heman, Jeduthun, their sons, and their relatives—were dressed in fine linen and stood east of the altar with cymbals, harps, and lyres. With the musicians were 120 priests blowing trumpets. When the priests left the holy place,

The builders laid the foundation of the Lord’s temple. Then the priests who were dressed in their robes took their places with trumpets, and the Levites who were Asaph’s descendants took their places with cymbals to praise the Lord according to the instructions of King David of Israel.

Mattaniah was the son of Mica, who was the son of Zabdi, who was the son of Asaph, the leader who led the prayer of thanksgiving. The Levite leader Bakbukiah was the second-in-command among his relatives; and so was Abda who was the son of Shammua, who was the son of Galal, who was the son of Jeduthum.

The man in charge of the Levites in Jerusalem was Uzzi, who was the son of Bani, who was the son of Hashabiah, who was the son of Mattaniah, who was the son of Mica from Asaph’s descendants who were the singers in charge of worship in God’s temple.

So did some priests with trumpets: Zechariah, who was the son of Jonathan, who was the son of Shemaiah, who was the son of Mattaniah, who was the son of Micaiah, who was the son of Zaccur, who was the son of Asaph.

Long ago in the time of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the singers to lead ⌞in singing⌟ the songs of praise and hymns of thanksgiving to God.

The Lord, the only true God, has spoken. He has summoned the earth from where the sun rises to where it sets.

God is truly good to Israel, to those whose lives are pure.

Why, O God, have you rejected us forever? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep in your care?

We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks. You are present, and your miracles confirm that.

God is known in Judah. His name is great in Israel.

Loudly, I cried to God. Loudly, I cried to God so that he would open his ears to ⌞hear⌟ me.

Open your ears to my teachings, my people. Turn your ears to the words from my mouth.

O God, the nations have invaded the land that belongs to you. They have dishonored your holy temple. They have left Jerusalem in ruins.

Open your ears, O Shepherd of Israel, the one who leads ⌞the descendants of⌟ Joseph like sheep, the one who is enthroned over the angels.

Sing joyfully to God, our strength. Shout happily to the God of Jacob.

God takes his place in his own assembly. He pronounces judgment among the gods:

O God, do not remain silent. Do not turn a deaf ear to me. Do not keep quiet, O God.

These are the cities for the families of Kohath that were chosen by drawing lots. These descendants of the priest Aaron the Levite received 13 cities from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
