David organized the Levites into divisions based on which of Levi’s sons (Gershon, Kohath, or Merari) they were descended from.

Ladan and Shimei were Gershon’s descendants.

The divisions of Aaron’s descendants were as follows: Aaron’s sons were Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

The following were the divisions of the gatekeepers: For Korah’s descendants there was Meshelemiah, the son of Kore, from the descendants of Asaph.

He determined the divisions of priests and Levites. He planned all the work done for worship in the Lord’s temple. He designed all the utensils for worship in the Lord’s temple.

Levi’s sons were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Next, Jehoiada appointed officials to be in charge of the Lord’s temple under the direction of the priests and Levites. (David had arranged them in divisions for the Lord’s temple. They were appointed to sacrifice burnt offerings to the Lord as it is written in Moses’ Teachings. They made these offerings with joy and singing as David had directed.)

He had the Levites stand in the Lord’s temple with cymbals, harps, and lyres as David, the king’s seer  Gad, and the prophet Nathan had ordered. This command came from the Lord through his prophets.

Hezekiah assigned the priests and the Levites to divisions. Each priest or Levite was put in a division based on the service he performed: sacrificing burnt offerings, sacrificing fellowship offerings, serving, giving thanks, or praising within the gates of the Lord’s camp.

So the service was prepared. The priests took their positions with the Levites according to their divisions, as the king had ordered.

Get yourselves ready with the family groups of your divisions, which are listed in the records of King David of Israel and the records of his son Solomon.

As Solomon’s father David had directed, he set up the divisions of priests for their service and the ⌞divisions of⌟ Levites for their appointed places. ⌞The Levites⌟ were to lead in praising ⌞the Lord⌟ and to serve beside the priests by doing whatever needed to be done each day. Solomon also set up divisions of doorkeepers at every gate because this is what David, the man of God, had commanded.

The priests were assigned to their divisions and the Levites to their groups ⌞to lead⌟ the worship of God in Jerusalem by following the directions written in the Book of Moses.

Gershon, Kohath, and Merari were the sons of Levi.

These are the names of Aaron’s sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests.

“This is the work the Kohathites will do in the tent of meeting: They will take care of the most holy things.
