Absalom appointed Amasa to take Joab’s place as commander of the army. (Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra, a descendant of Ishmael. His mother was Abigail, the daughter of Nahash and sister of Joab’s mother Zeruiah.)

May the Lord decide between you and me. May the Lord take revenge on you for what you did to me. However, I will not lay a hand on you.

It’s like people used to say long ago, ‘Wickedness comes from wicked people.’ But I will not lay a hand on you.

When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that you speaking, my servant David?” and Saul cried loudly.

He will appoint them to be his officers over 1,000 or over 50 soldiers, to plow his ground and harvest his crops, and to make weapons and equipment for his chariots.
