Romans 8:3

First Nations Version

That law did not have the power to set us free, because of our broken humanity. But Creator found a way by sending his Son, in the likeness of broken and weak human beings, to bear the weight of our broken ways in his own human body and set us free from our guilt and shame.

The Chosen One paid a great price to set us free from the law’s demand about doing by taking on himself the law’s curse. As it is written in our Sacred Teachings, “Anyone who has been hanged upon a tree-pole is under a curse.”

Creator Sets Free (Jesus), the one who knew no broken ways, was chosen by the Great Spirit to bear our broken ways, so that we would become the ones who represent his right ways.

For by this one offering he has for all time completely set free the ones he is making holy.

He took on himself our broken ways when he hung on a tree-pole—the cross. He did this so we could die to our broken ways and come alive to his right ways. By his wounds we have been made whole.

For we know that our old self was nailed to the cross with him, killing the evil desires in our bodies, so that our broken ways will not rule over us.

Does this mean that our tribal law is against Creator’s promises? It does not! For if laws had the power to give life, then good standing with Creator would have come through our tribal law.

If the Great Spirit did not hold back his own Son, but instead gave him up for us all, will he then hold back on anything else? Along with his Son, he will give us all there is to give.

So then, it should be clear to all that no one can be in good standing in the eyes of the Great Spirit by doing what our tribal law says. What is clear is that the law shows us how bad our hearts have become and how broken our lives truly are.

So then, since these brothers and sisters all share in what it means to be weak human beings, he also became a weak human being just like them. He did this so that by dying he would bring an end to the one who holds the power of death—the evil trickster.

Instead, he emptied himself, became nothing, and gave up all he had. Then, having been born as a human being, he took on himself the lowly form of a servant.

But the Chosen One, after performing the once-for-all-time ceremony to heal our broken ways, sat down at Creator’s right hand—the place of greatest honor.

For we do not have a chief holy man who is unable to feel the same kind of pain and sorrow we feel. Even though he faced the same temptations we face, he never gave in to them or did anything wrong.

I am saying that Creator Sets Free (Jesus) needed to become fully and truly human. In this way, he could serve as Creator’s honorable and merciful chief holy man and perform the ancient mercy-seat ceremony one last time to heal the bad hearts and broken ways of the people.

If it would help my Tribal Family members to find the truth that would set them free and make them whole, I would be willing to be cursed, cut off from the Chosen One!

Creator’s Word became a flesh-and-blood human being and pitched his sacred tent among us, living as one of us. We looked upon his great beauty and saw how honorable he was, the kind of honor held only by this one Son who fully represents his Father—full of his great kindness and truth.

They went back to the man who was blind and said to him, “Give honor to the Great Spirit for healing you, not to Creator Sets Free (Jesus), for we know he is an outcast with a bad heart.”

They also nailed two thieves to their own crosses, one to his right, the other to his left.

I can now see that there is nothing good in this weak part of me that gives in to wrong desires, for it keeps me from doing what I know to be right.
