“The second is like the first,” he added. “‘You must love your fellow human beings in the same way you love yourselves.’


If you “love your fellow human beings in the same way you love yourselves,” as it says in our Sacred Teachings, you are doing well, for you are walking in the true meaning and purpose of the law of our Honored Chief.


For all of our tribal law finds its full meaning and purpose in this one instruction, “Love your fellow human beings in the same way you love yourself.”


The scroll keeper spoke from the words of the law, “You must love the Great Spirit from deep within, with the strength of your arms, the thoughts of your mind, and the courage of your heart, and you must love your fellow human beings in the same way you love yourselves.”


There are many instructions in the law, such as, “Do not be unfaithful in marriage,” “Do not kill a fellow human being,” “Do not take what is not yours,” and “Do not long for what belongs to another.” All of these, and any other instructions there might be, all come together in this one saying, “Love your fellow human beings in the same way you love yourself.”


“You have been told to love only your own people and to despise others as your enemy.


“Wisdomkeeper,” the man answered, “from my youth I have followed all of these instructions. What have I left undone?”
