First Nations Version

Creator Sets Free (Jesus) called his followers to his side and said to them, “I have pity in my heart for all these people, for they have been with us for three days with no food. Some of them have come from a great distance, and if I send them away hungry, they might lose their strength and faint.”

When he saw the great number of people needing help, he was moved in his spirit with great compassion for them. He knew they were pushed down with no one to help and scattered about like sheep without a shepherd to watch over them.


Just before the sun began to rise, Small Man (Paul) urged everyone to eat something. “For fourteen days now you have been constantly worrying and have not eaten any food,” he said to them.


For we do not have a chief holy man who is unable to feel the same kind of pain and sorrow we feel. Even though he faced the same temptations we face, he never gave in to them or did anything wrong.


When Creator Sets Free (Jesus) saw her, he felt pity for her and said, “Do not weep. The Great Spirit has seen your tears.”


“The evil spirit has many times thrown him into a fire to burn him or into water to drown him. If you are able to do anything, have pity and help us!”


“Honored One,” they said to him, “When he was still alive, that trickster Creator Sets Free (Jesus) said, ‘On the third day I will come back from the dead.’


He felt pity for them, so he touched their eyes, and right then their eyes were opened and they could see! So they went with him down the road.


Just as he was in the belly of a great fish for three days and nights, the True Human Being will be in the womb of the earth for three days and nights.


When Creator Sets Free (Jesus) heard how Gift of Goodwill (John) had been put to death, he found a canoe and went off to a deserted place to be alone for a while. But the crowds of people, when they heard about it, went after Creator Sets Free (Jesus) from their villages.


“This is a lonely and desolate place,” they answered him. “Where could we find enough food to feed all these people?”
