He could see them paddling hard against the wind. Then, early in the morning, just before sunrise, he walked out on the lake and was going to pass right past them.

As they entered the village, he walked on as if to go farther.


He will do this whether he returns late in the night or early in the morning.


They are born in a new way, not from a human father’s plans or desires, but born from above—by the Great Spirit.


His followers were still in the canoe, far from land. The wind blew strong against them, and the waves pounded the canoe and began to toss it about.


“But know this: If the elder of a family had known at what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and stopped the thief from breaking in.


As the sun was setting, his followers were still in the canoe out in the middle of the lake, while Creator Sets Free (Jesus) was alone on the land.


His followers looked out in the dim light and saw him walking on the lake. Thinking he was a ghost,


They must stay awake and be ready, doing what he says, for they do not know when the chief will return. It may be when the sun is setting, or late into the night, or when the rooster crows early in the morning.
