First Nations Version

The people of the village had tried to capture the man and tie him down, but he would tear their ropes and break their chains. No one was strong enough to overpower him.

This man had been living at the local burial grounds, and no one could bind him, not even with iron chains.


Day and night he wandered about the burial grounds and into the mountains. He would never stop wailing and cutting himself with sharp stones.


He said this because Creator Sets Free (Jesus) had ordered the evil spirit to leave the man. In the past this evil spirit had often taken hold of the man, so the villagers had kept the man bound with chains and under close watch. But the man had broken the chains, and the evil spirit had forced him out into the desert.
