Luke 4:2First Nations VersionThere, for forty days, he would be put to the test by Accuser (Satan), the evil trickster snake. In the story of creation, the first man and woman lived in a Garden of Beauty and Harmony. The evil trickster snake came to them and twisted the words of the Great Spirit to deceive them. They listened to the snake, lost the life of beauty and harmony, and fell under the curse of death—both physical and spiritual. This snake is an evil spirit, sometimes called Accuser (Satan), who opposes the good things Creator wants for all two-leggeds. For forty days and nights Creator Sets Free (Jesus) ate nothing. His body became weak, and his hunger grew strong. When the evil trickster snake saw that Creator Sets Free (Jesus) was weak and hungry, he came to him and whispered in his ear. See the chapter |
Since Creator Sets Free (Jesus) suffered temptation, he is able to help all who are being tempted. The tribes of Wrestles with Creator (Israel) were given this mercy-seat ceremony to show that the Great Spirit had washed them clean from their bad hearts and broken ways. Once a year the chief holy man would take the blood of a ceremonial animal into the Most Holy Place in Creator’s sacred lodge and sprinkle the blood onto the lid of a wooden box covered with gold. The lid of this wooden box was called the mercy seat.
Weary from his journey, about the sixth hour of the day, Creator Sets Free (Jesus) sat down to rest at the ancient watering hole of Heel Grabber (Jacob), while the ones who walked the road with him went to the nearby village to find some food. The sun had reached midpoint in the sky. It was now the time of day when no one would normally come to the watering hole. A woman from High Place (Samaria) came to the well to draw water. Creator Sets Free (Jesus) saw the woman and said to her, “Would you give me some water to drink?” This surprised the woman, because a traditional man would not speak to a woman in public.
