So do not keep deciding these kinds of things ahead of time. Instead, wait until the coming of our Honored Chief. On that day he will shine his light on the things hidden in darkness and make known the plans of all human hearts. The Knower of Hearts will then give to each person whatever honor is due.


The Knower of Hearts made this clear when he gave them the Holy Spirit in the same manner as he did for us.


But let your beauty shine out from who you are deep within your heart—a gentle spirit filled with peace and harmony. That kind of beauty never fades and has great value in the eyes of the Great Spirit.


“You Separated Ones (Pharisees) always wash the outside of your cups and bowls, but on the inside your hearts are full of greed and worthless ways.


But the scroll keeper, wanting to look good to others, asked him, “Who are my fellow human beings?”

He did not need anyone to tell him about human beings, for he knew the hearts of humankind.


“They want to look important to others, so to look spiritual they wear large and fancy medicine pouches and long fringes on their outfits.


“Wisdomkeeper,” the man answered, “from my youth I have followed all of these instructions.”


“The Separated One (Pharisee) kept his distance from the tribal tax collector and prayed out loud, ‘Creator, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humankind—like the ones who use force to get from others what they want, or who are not faithful in marriage, or who have no understanding of right or wrong. “After he betrayed Creator Sets Free (Jesus), he used the blood money he was paid to buy a field. There he hung himself on a tree. His body fell to the ground and broke open, spilling out his insides.


With many words they make long, empty prayers to trick widows into giving them their homes and possessions, but they will all come to a worse end than others.”


They kept an eye on him and sent spies who pretended to be good-hearted to trap him in his words, so they would have a reason to turn him over to the power of the governor of People of Iron (Romans).


“When you go without food to seek spiritual things, do not be like the ones who put on a false face. They hang their heads down and darken their faces to look as if they are going without food. They only want people to notice them and think they are spiritual. I speak from my heart, they already have all the honor they deserve—they will get no more.


“When you send your voice to the Great Spirit, do not be like the ones who love to stand up and pray with a loud voice in the gathering houses and along the village pathways, hoping to be seen and heard by others. The truth is, they have their honor already. They will get no more.


When you give gifts to the poor and do good things for others, do not brag about it on the village pathways or in the gathering houses, like those who put on a false face, pretending to be something they are not. The truth is, they honor only themselves and they will get nothing more.


Creator Sets Free (Jesus) asked him a third time, “One Who Hears (Simon), Son of Gift of Kindness (John), do you love me as a friend?” Stands on the Rock (Peter) felt his heart sink because he asked the third time, “Do you love me as a friend?” “Wisdomkeeper!” he said, “you know all things, you must know how deeply I care for you. I am your friend!” Creator Sets Free (Jesus) said to him again, “Feed my sheep.”


He then told a story to warn the ones who trusted in themselves and thought they were better than others.


“Can you not see?” Creator Sets Free (Jesus) said. “The tribal tax collector returned home in good standing with Creator, but the Separated One (Pharisee) did not! The ones who think too highly of themselves will be brought down low. The ones who humble themselves will be lifted up.”


They stood the men before the council and prayed over them, “O Great Chief, Knower of Hearts, show to us the one you have chosen


The one who sees into our hearts knows the Spirit’s thoughts and prays with us in our weakness, so we can become who he created us to be.
