First Nations Version

Creator Sets Free (Jesus) said these things at the sacred lodge, where he was teaching, near the storehouse where they keep the ceremonial gifts. No one laid a hand on him, for his time had not yet come. The people began to argue among themselves about him.

The tribal leaders were looking for a way to arrest him, but no one could even lay a hand on him, for it was not yet his time.


You can go to the festival, but I am not going now—it is not my time yet.”


Creator Sets Free (Jesus) found a place to sit across from the storehouse of the sacred lodge. He watched as people came to put their gifts on the offering blanket. The ones with many possessions were putting down more than others.


The lodge soldiers were amazed by his words and could not bring themselves to arrest him.


He gathered his followers around him and told them about the widow’s gift. “I speak from my heart,” he said, “this widow has given more than all the others.


They picked the silver pieces up from the floor and said, “It is not permitted to put them in the storehouse of the sacred lodge, for it is blood money.”


The tribal leaders moved toward him to take him by force, but he slipped through their hands and walked away. Creator Sets Free (Jesus) decided it was time to leave Village of Peace (Jerusalem) again.


They picked up stones to throw at him, but he hid himself in the crowd, passed them by, and walked out of the sacred lodge.


When the head holy men and the scroll keepers realized that this story was about them, they looked for a way to arrest him, but they could not, for they were afraid of what the people might do.


Creator Sets Free (Jesus) then turned to the ones who had come to take him and said, “Why do you come at me with clubs and long knives as if I were a thief? Did I not sit with you every day in the sacred lodge? Why did you not take me then?


Creator Sets Free (Jesus) looked up and saw people with many possessions bringing their gifts to the giveaway at the sacred lodge.


“Honored woman,” he said to her. “Why are you telling me? Is this our concern? It is not yet my time to show who I am.”


Creator Sets Free (Jesus) came secretly to the festival and stayed away from the crowds. He waited until the midpoint of the festival, went to the sacred lodge, and began to teach.


Early in the morning at the sunrise, he returned again to the sacred lodge. All the people began to gather around him, so he sat down and once again began to teach and tell his stories. Across the plaza a cloud of dust was rising from a group of people who were walking toward Creator Sets Free (Jesus) as he was teaching. They were forcefully dragging a woman along with them. He could see her tears and the look of terror on her face.
