The sound of the wail of the shepherds, for their glory is ruined! The sound of the roar of the lions, for the thicket of the Jordan is ruined!

“Behold, like a lion coming up from the thicket of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?

Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,

Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

In one month I destroyed the three shepherds. But I became impatient with them, and they also detested me.

“On that day you shall not be put to shame because of the deeds by which you have rebelled against me; for then I will remove from your midst your proudly exultant ones, and you shall no longer be haughty in my holy mountain.

Her officials within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves that leave nothing till the morning.

“On that day,” declares the Lord, “a cry will be heard from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second Quarter, a loud crash from the hills.

Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who dwells in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?”

Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests; wail, O ministers of the altar. Go in, pass the night in sackcloth, O ministers of my God! Because grain offering and drink offering are withheld from the house of your God.

The inhabitants of Samaria tremble for the calf of Beth-aven. Its people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests— those who rejoiced over it and over its glory— for it has departed from them.

Behold, like a lion coming up from the jungle of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make him run away from her. And I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?

then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.’”

Do not trust in these deceptive words: ‘This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord.’

In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.

The lions have roared against him; they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste; his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.

You shall leave your name to my chosen for a curse, and the Lord God will put you to death, but his servants he will call by another name,

Save me from the mouth of the lion! You have rescued me from the horns of the wild oxen!

Their roaring is like a lion, like young lions they roar; they growl and seize their prey; they carry it off, and none can rescue.

Wail, O cypress, for the cedar has fallen, for the glorious trees are ruined! Wail, oaks of Bashan, for the thick forest has been felled!

and say: What was your mother? A lioness! Among lions she crouched; in the midst of young lions she reared her cubs.
