For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

They are dead, they will not live; they are shades, they will not arise; to that end you have visited them with destruction and wiped out all remembrance of them.

There is no remembrance of former things, nor will there be any remembrance of later things yet to be among those who come after.

For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise?

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

His sons come to honor, and he does not know it; they are brought low, and he perceives it not.

For of the wise as of the fool there is no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. How the wise dies just like the fool!

Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth!

Then I saw the wicked buried. They used to go in and out of the holy place and were praised in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.

For you are our Father, though Abraham does not know us, and Israel does not acknowledge us; you, O Lord, are our Father, our Redeemer from of old is your name.

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.

For I know that you will bring me to death and to the house appointed for all living.

But he who is joined with all the living has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.

We must all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God will not take away life, and he devises means so that the banished one will not remain an outcast.

But I, O Lord, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you.

Afterward the woman also died.
