Deuteronomy 8:2

And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.

And he cried to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the Lord made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them,

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn off your feet.

I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Also it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years in the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

And the haughtiness of man shall be humbled, and the lofty pride of men shall be brought low, and the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.

The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests hearts.

to him who led his people through the wilderness, for his steadfast love endures forever;

Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.

In distress you called, and I delivered you; I answered you in the secret place of thunder; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old.

that he may turn man aside from his deed and conceal pride from a man;

And when he was in distress, he entreated the favor of the Lord his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers.

you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams. For the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

you shall not be afraid of them but you shall remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt,

who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.

In the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the people of Israel according to all that the Lord had given him in commandment to them,

After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”

and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.

And his prayer, and how God was moved by his entreaty, and all his sin and his faithlessness, and the sites on which he built high places and set up the Asherim and the images, before he humbled himself, behold, they are written in the Chronicles of the Seers.

The people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land. They ate the manna till they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

Moses said to the people, “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.”

And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.

in order to test Israel by them, whether they will take care to walk in the way of the Lord as their fathers did, or not.”

They were for the testing of Israel, to know whether Israel would obey the commandments of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

you in your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud to lead them in the way did not depart from them by day, nor the pillar of fire by night to light for them the way by which they should go.

I am the Lord your God; walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules,

Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,

They did not say, ‘Where is the Lord who brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and pits, in a land of drought and deep darkness, in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?’
