The close relative [29] answered, “I cannot buy back the land. That land should belong to me. But I cannot buy it. If I do, I might lose my own land. So you can buy the land.”
Then Judah said to Er’s brother Onan, “Go and sleep with your dead brother’s wife. [228] Become like a husband to her. If children are born, then they will belong to your brother Er.”
A person in your country might become very poor. He might be so poor that he must sell his property. So his close relative must come and buy back the property for his relative.
If the man does not want to take his brother’s wife, then the brother’s wife must go to the leaders at the town meeting place. His brother’s wife must say to the leaders, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to keep his brother’s name alive in Israel. He will not do the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’
then his brother’s wife must come to him in front of the leaders. She must take his shoe off his foot. Then she must spit in his face. She must say, ‘This is being done to the man who will not build up his brother’s family!’
Stay here tonight. In the morning we will see if he will help [21] you. If he decides to help you, then that is fine. If he refuses to help, then I promise, as the Lord lives, I will marry you and buy back Elimelech’s land for you. [22] So lie here until morning.”
