They did that because the Midianite and Amalekite people from the east always came and destroyed their crops.

The people of Israel became very poor because of the people of Midian. So the people of Israel cried to the Lord for help.

The Israelites {that lived} on the other side of the valley saw the Israelite army running away. They saw that Saul and his sons were dead. So those Israelites left their cities and ran away. Then the Philistines came and lived in those cities.
