Matthew 22:16

Easy To Read Version

The Pharisees sent some men to Jesus \{to trick him\}. They sent some of their own followers and some men from the group called Herodians. {\cf2\super [306]} These men said, “Teacher, we know that you are an honest man. We know that you teach the truth about God’s way. You are not afraid of what other people think about you. All men are the same to you.

But Micaiah answered, “No! I promised that by the power of the Lord I will say the things that the Lord tells me to say!”

People tell lies to their neighbors.\par Each and every person flatters {\cf2\super [68]} his\par neighbors with lies.\par

Those people don’t tell the truth.\par They are liars that twist the truth.\par Their mouths are like empty {\cf2\super [27]} graves.\par They say nice things to other people,\par but they are only trying to trap them.\par

My enemies attack their own friends.\par They don’t do the things they agree to do.\par

If a person tries to get what he wants by saying nice things to people, then he is only setting a trap for himself.

Levi taught the true teachings. Levi didn’t teach lies! Levi was honest and he loved peace. Levi followed me and saved many people from being punished for the bad things they did.

“You don’t live the way I told you! You have not accepted my teachings! So I will make you become not important—people will not respect you!”

They said, “Teacher, Moses told us that if a married man dies and he had no children, then his brother must marry the woman. Then they will have children for the dead brother. {\cf2\super [312]}

Then the second brother also died. The same thing happened to the third brother and all the other brothers.

Jesus answered, “Go into the city. Go to a man I know. Tell him that the teacher says, ‘The chosen time is near. I will have the Passover {\cf2\super [401]} meal with my followers at your house.’”

So Judas went to Jesus and said, “Hello, teacher!” Then Judas kissed Jesus.

Jesus started to leave, but a man ran to him and bowed on his knees before Jesus. The man asked, “Good teacher, what must I do to get the life that never ends?”

Later, the Jewish leaders sent some Pharisees {\cf2\super [155]} and some men from the group called Herodians {\cf2\super [156]} to Jesus. They wanted to catch Jesus saying something wrong.

The Pharisees and Herodians went to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we know that you are an honest man. You are not afraid of what other people think about you. All men are the same to you. And you teach the truth about God’s way. Tell us: Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar {\cf2\super [157]} ? Yes or no? Should we pay taxes, or should we not pay taxes?”

Then the Pharisees {\cf2\super [42]} left and made plans with the Herodians {\cf2\super [43]} about a way to kill Jesus.

Jesus warned them, “Be careful! Guard against the yeast {\cf2\super [95]} of the Pharisees {\cf2\super [96]} and the yeast of Herod. {\cf2\super [97]} ”

So the men asked Jesus, “Teacher, we know that what you say and teach is true. It doesn’t matter who is listening—you teach the same to all people. You always teach the truth about God’s way.

In response, Jesus said to the Pharisee, {\cf2\super [144]} “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

Jesus answered, “I am the way. I am the truth and the life. The only way to the Father is through me.

Pilate said, “So you are a king!”

Any person that teaches his own ideas is trying to get honor for himself. But a person that tries to bring honor to the one that sent him—that person speaks the truth. There is nothing false in him.

We don’t sell the word of God for a profit like many other people do. No! But in Christ we speak in truth before God. We speak like men sent from God.

But we have turned away from secret and shameful ways. We don’t use trickery, and we don’t change the teaching of God. No! We teach the truth plainly. This is how we show people who we are. And this is how they can know in their hearts what kind of people we are before God.

That is why we never become weak. Our physical body is becoming older and weaker, but our spirit inside us is made new every day.

Now do you think I am trying to make people accept me? No! God is the One I am trying to please. Am I trying to please people? If I wanted to please people, I would not be a servant of Jesus Christ.

Those men who seemed to be important did not change the Good News {\cf2\super [12]} message I tell people. (It doesn’t matter to me if they were “important” or not. To God all men are the same.)

{They cared more for you, Lord, than for their own families.} They ignored their fathers and mothers. They did not recognize their brothers. They did not pay attention to their children. But they obeyed your commands. They kept your Agreement.

No. We speak the Good News because God tested us and trusted us to tell the Good News. So when we speak, we are not trying to please men. We are trying to please God. God is the One who tests (looks closely at) our hearts.

But the wisdom that comes from God is like this: First, it is pure. It is also peaceful, gentle, and easy to please. This wisdom is always ready to help people who have trouble and to do good things for other people. This wisdom is always fair and honest.

But, dear friends, use your most holy faith to build yourselves up strong. Pray with the Holy Spirit. {\cf2\super [10]}
