The followers asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah {\cf2\super [238]} must come {\cf2\super [239]} first \{before the Christ {\cf2\super [240]} comes\}?”
And if you will believe the things the law and the prophets said, then you will believe that John is Elijah. {\cf2\super [140]} The law and the prophets said he would come.
The followers answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptizer. Other people say you are Elijah. {\cf2\super [226]} And some people say that you are Jeremiah {\cf2\super [227]} or one of the prophets. {\cf2\super [228]} ”
These men said to John: “You say you are not the Christ. {\cf2\super [15]} You say you are not Elijah {\cf2\super [16]} or the Prophet. {\cf2\super [17]} Then why do you baptize {\cf2\super [18]} people?”
