And you, Capernaum, {\cf2\super [149]} will you be lifted up to heaven? No! You will be thrown down to the place of death. I did many miracles in you. If those same miracles had happened in Sodom, {\cf2\super [150]} \{the people of\} Sodom \{would have stopped sinning and it\} would still be a city today.

The Lord knew that the people of Sodom were very evil sinners.

Look how the Lord has set\par the Daughter of Zion {\cf2\super [8]} under a cloud.\par He has thrown the glory of Israel\par from the sky to the ground.\par The Lord didn’t keep in mind that Israel was his footstool,\par on the day of his anger.\par

I will send you down into that deep hole—to the place where dead people are. You will join the people that died long ago. I will send you to the world below, like all the other old, empty cities. You will be with all the others that go down to the grave. No one will live in you then. You will never again be in the land of the living!

“Now, none of the trees by that water will be proud. They won’t try to reach the clouds. None of the strong trees that drink that water will brag about being tall. Why? I tell you the truth. On the judgment day it will be worse for that town than for the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah. {\cf2\super [127]}

So I tell you, you are Peter. {\cf2\super [230]} And I will build my church on this rock. The power of death {\cf2\super [231]} will not be able to defeat my church.

Jesus and his followers went to Capernaum. {\cf2\super [249]} In Capernaum some men came to Peter. They were the men that collected the two-drachma tax. {\cf2\super [250]} They asked, “Does your teacher pay the two-drachma tax?”

Jesus did not stay in Nazareth. He went and lived in Capernaum, a town near the lake (Lake Galilee). Capernaum is in the area near Zebulun and Naphtali.

Jesus went to the city of Capernaum. When Jesus entered the city, an army officer {\cf2\super [90]} came to him and begged for help.

And you, Capernaum, {\cf2\super [186]} will you be lifted up to heaven? No! You will be thrown down to the place of death!

Every person that makes himself important will be made humble. But the person that makes himself humble will be made important.”

He was sent to the place of death {\cf2\super [266]} and had much pain. The rich man saw Abraham far away with Lazarus in his arms.

Jesus said to them, “I know that you will tell me the old saying: ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ You want to say, ‘We heard about some things that you did in Capernaum. Do those same things here in your own home town!’”

because you will not leave me\par in the place of death. {\cf2\super [31]} \par You will not let the body of your Holy One rot in the grave.\par

David knew this before it happened. That is why David said this about that person:

I am the One who lives. I was dead, but look: I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. {\cf2\super [11]}

The bodies of the two witnesses will lie in the street of the great city. This city is named Sodom {\cf2\super [84]} and Egypt. These names for the city have a special meaning. This is the city where the Lord was killed.

The sea gave up the dead people that were in it. Death and Hades {\cf2\super [156]} gave up the dead people that were in them. Each person was judged by the things he had done.

I looked and there before me was a pale-colored horse. The rider on the horse was death. Hades {\cf2\super [50]} was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth. They were given power to kill people by using the sword, by starving, by disease, and with the wild animals of the earth.
