So what did you go out to see? A prophet {\cf2\super [135]} ? Yes, and I tell you, John is more than a prophet.

These Jewish leaders heard this story that Jesus told. They knew that this story was about them. So they wanted to find a way to arrest Jesus. But they were afraid of the people. So the Jewish leaders left Jesus and went away.

“Now you, little boy, will be called a prophet {\cf2\super [25]} of the Most High (God).\par You will go first before the Lord\par to make the people ready\par for the Lord’s coming.\par

The priests, the teachers of the law, and the Jewish leaders all talked about this. They said to each other, “If we answer, ‘John’s baptism was from God,’ then he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe John?’

So they answered, “We don’t know the answer.”

But the Pharisees {\cf2\super [137]} and teachers of the law refused to accept God’s plan for themselves; they did not let John baptize them.)

and many people came to him. The people said, “John never did a miracle. {\cf2\super [174]} But everything John said about this man (Jesus) is true.”

Then the captain and his men went out and brought the apostles back. But the soldiers did not use force, because they were afraid of the people. The soldiers were afraid that the people would \{become angry and\} kill them (the soldiers) with rocks.
