You rejected your agreement.\par You threw the king’s crown into the dirt.\par

Goodness makes a nation great. But sin is a shame to any people.

This will happen because Jerusalem has stumbled \{and has done wrong\}. Judah has fallen \{and has stopped following God\}. The things they say and do are against the Lord. The Lord’s glorious eyes clearly see all these things.

Tell these things to the king and his wife,\par “Come down from your thrones.\par Your beautiful crowns have fallen from your heads.”\par

This trouble is your own fault!\par The Lord your God\par was leading you the right way, {\cf2\super [10]} \par but you turned away from him.\par

You did bad things,\par and those bad things will only\par bring punishment to you.\par Trouble will come to you.\par And that trouble will teach you a lesson.\par Think about it!\par Then you will understand how bad it is\par to turn away from your God.\par It is wrong not to fear and respect me!”\par This message was from my Master,\par the Lord All-Powerful.\par

The people of Israel came into this land and took it for their own. But those people didn’t obey you. They didn’t follow your teachings. They didn’t do the things you commanded. So you made all these terrible things happen to the people of Israel.

“The way you lived and the things you did\par brought this trouble to you.\par It is your evil that made your life so hard.\par Your evil life brought the pain\par that hurts deep in your heart.”\par

Jerusalem once was a city full of people.\par But now the city is so deserted!\par Jerusalem was one of the greatest cities\par in the world.\par But now she {\cf2\super [1]} has become like a widow.\par She was once a princess among cities.\par But now she has been made a slave.\par

Now Jerusalem says,\par “I refused to listen to the Lord.\par So the Lord is right for doing these things.\par So listen, all you people!\par Look at my pain!\par My young women and men\par have gone into captivity.\par

“Look at me, Lord. I am in distress!\par My insides are upset!\par My heart feels like it has turned\par upside down inside me!\par My heart feels this way\par because I have been so stubborn!\par In the streets, the sword killed my children.\par Inside the houses, death was there.\par

Jerusalem sinned very badly.\par Because Jerusalem sinned,\par she became a ruined city\par that people shake their heads about.\par In the past people respected her.\par Now those people hate her.\par They hate her because they abused her.\par Jerusalem groans.\par She turns away.\par

Look how the Lord has set\par the Daughter of Zion {\cf2\super [8]} under a cloud.\par He has thrown the glory of Israel\par from the sky to the ground.\par The Lord didn’t keep in mind that Israel was his footstool,\par on the day of his anger.\par

This happened because the prophets\par of Jerusalem sinned.\par This happened because the priests\par of Jerusalem did evil things.\par Those people were shedding blood\par in the city of Jerusalem.\par They were shedding the blood\par of good people.\par

The Lord my Master says these things, “Take off the turban! {\cf2\super [163]} Take off the crown! The time has come to change. The important leaders will be brought low. And people that are not important now will become important leaders.

So I have started to punish you.\par I will destroy you because of your sins.\par

Don’t be afraid of the things that will happen to you. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison. He will do this to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But be faithful, even if you have to die. If you continue faithful, then I will give you the crown of life.

“I am coming soon. Continue the way you are now. Then no person will take away your crown (reward).

The Israelites met together at Mizpah. They got water and poured it out before the Lord. {In this way, they began a time of fasting.} They did not eat any food that day and they confessed their sins. They said, “We have sinned against the Lord.” So Samuel served as a judge [86] of Israel at Mizpah.
