The Lord pulled up his own tent {\cf2\super [13]} \par as if it were a garden.\par He has ruined the place where the people\par went to meet to worship him.\par The Lord has made people forget\par the special assemblies\par and special days of rest {\cf2\super [14]} in Zion.\par The Lord rejected the king and the priests.\par He was angry and rejected them.\par

Those soldiers burned your Holy Place.\par That temple was built to honor your name.\par But they pulled it down to the ground.\par

God’s temple is in Salem. {\cf2\super [432]} \par God’s house is on Mount Zion.\par

God, why did you pull down the walls\par that protect your “vine”?\par Now every person who passes by\par picks its grapes.\par

You pulled down the walls of the king’s city.\par You destroyed all his fortresses.\par

“Don’t continue bringing worthless sacrifices to me. I hate the incense {\cf2\super [8]} you give me. I can’t bear your feasts for the New Moon, {\cf2\super [9]} the Sabbath, {\cf2\super [10]} and your holidays. I hate the evil you do during your holy meetings.

The Daughter of Zion (Jerusalem) is now like an empty tent left in a field of grapes. It is like an old house left in a field of cucumbers. It is like a city that has been defeated by enemies.”

I will make your holy rulers not holy. I will cause Jacob to be completely mine. {\cf2\super [390]} Bad things will happen to Israel.”

Now, I will tell you what I will do to my field of grapes:\par

I will make my vineyard {\cf2\super [47]} an empty field.\par No person will care for the plants.\par No person will work in the field.\par Weeds and thorns will grow there.\par I will command the clouds\par not to rain on the field.”\par

Your holy people lived in their land\par only a short time.\par Then our enemies trampled (walk on)\par your holy temple. {\cf2\super [463]} \par

Our ancestors worshiped you in\par our holy temple.\par Our temple was so wonderful,\par but now it has been burned in the fire!\par All our precious possessions\par have been destroyed.\par

“But if you don’t listen to me and obey me, then bad things will happen. If you carry loads into Jerusalem on the Sabbath {\cf2\super [148]} day, then you are not keeping it a holy day. So I will start a fire that can’t be put out. That fire will start at the gates of Jerusalem, and it will burn until it burns even the palaces. {\cf2\super [149]} ”

“The Lord All-Powerful, the God of the people of Israel, says: ‘I showed my anger against Jerusalem. I punished the people that lived in Jerusalem. In the same way, I will show my anger against every person that goes to Egypt. People will use you as an example when they ask for bad things to happen to other people. You will become like a curse word. People will be ashamed of you. People will insult you. And you will never see Judah again.’

Jeremiah, say this to Baruch: ‘This is what the Lord says: I will tear down what I have built. And I will pull up what I have planted. I will do that everywhere in Judah.

People are running out of Babylon.\par They are escaping from that country\par and coming to Zion {\cf2\super [412]} .\par They are telling everyone the good news\par about what the Lord is doing.\par The Lord is giving Babylon\par the punishment it deserves.\par The Lord is destroying Babylon,\par because it destroyed his temple!\par

The roads to Zion {\cf2\super [2]} are very sad.\par They are sad because no person comes to Zion for the holidays anymore.\par All of Zion’s gates have been destroyed.\par All of Zion’s priests groan.\par Zion’s young women\par have been taken away. {\cf2\super [3]} \par And all of this is a bitter sadness to Zion.\par

The Lord himself destroyed those people.\par He didn’t look after them anymore.\par He didn’t respect the priests.\par He was not friendly to the elders of Judah.\par

The king was very important to us.\par He was like the breath we breathe.\par But the king was trapped by them.\par The king was chosen by the Lord himself.\par We had said about the king,\par “We will live in his shadow.\par He protects us from the nations.”\par

The enemy hanged our princes.\par They didn’t honor our elders.\par

But the king of Judah won’t escape. Why? Because he ignored his agreement. He broke his promise to Nebuchadnezzar.

I will destroy your cities. I will make your holy places empty. I will stop smelling your offerings.

like people at a party.”\par The Lord said,\par “I will take away your shame.\par I will make those people stop hurting you. {\cf2\super [23]} \par

“You don’t live the way I told you! You have not accepted my teachings! So I will make you become not important—people will not respect you!”
