Lamentations 1:18Easy To Read VersionNow Jerusalem says,\par “I refused to listen to the Lord.\par So the Lord is right for doing these things.\par So listen, all you people!\par Look at my pain!\par My young women and men\par have gone into captivity.\par See the chapter |
The bad things that happened to us are our own fault. We have done evil things, and we have much guilt. But you, our God, have punished us much less than we should have been. We have done many terrible sins, and we should have been punished worse. And you have even let some of our people escape captivity.
All you people that pass by on the road,\par you don’t seem to care.\par But look at me and see.\par Is there any pain like my pain?\par Is there any pain like the pain\par that has come to me?\par Is there any pain like the pain\par that the Lord has punished me with?\par He has punished me on the day\par of his great anger.\par
“Lord, you are good, and goodness belongs to you! But shame belongs to us today. Shame belongs to the people from Judah and Jerusalem. Shame belongs to all the people of Israel—to the people that are near, and to the people that are far away. Lord, you scattered those people among many nations. And the people of Israel in all those nations should be ashamed. They should be ashamed of all the bad things they did against you, Lord.
At that time,\par the beautiful young men and women\par will become weak from thirst.\par Those people made promises\par by the sin of Samaria, {\cf2\super [105]} \par They said,\par ‘Dan, {\cf2\super [106]} as surely as your god lives,\par \{we promise\} …’\par And they said,\par ‘As surely as the god of Beersheba {\cf2\super [107]} lives,\par \{we promise\} …’\par But those people will fall,\par and they will never get up again.”\par
The prophets were my servants. I used them to tell your ancestors about my laws and teachings. And your ancestors finally learned their lesson. They said, ‘The Lord All-Powerful did the things he said he would do. He punished us for the way we lived and for all the bad things we did.’ So they came back to God.”
