Easy To Read Version

Zion {\cf2\super [6]} spread out her hands.\par There was no person to comfort her.\par The Lord had given orders to Jacob’s {\cf2\super [7]} enemies.\par The Lord ordered Jacob’s enemies\par to surround the city.\par Jerusalem has become something dirty.\par She is something dirty among those enemies.\par

Then Solomon stood in front of the Lord’s altar. [113] All of the people were standing in front of him. King Solomon spread his hands and looked toward the sky.

When any of these things happen, if even one man is sorry {for his sins} and spreads his hands in prayer toward this temple,

So Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, and all his army came to fight against Jerusalem. This happened on the 10th day of the tenth month of Zedekiah’s ninth year as king. Nebuchadnezzar put his army around Jerusalem {to stop people from going in and out of the city}. Then he built a wall of dirt around the city.

Again I saw that many people are treated badly. I saw their tears. And I saw that there was no one to comfort those sad people. I saw cruel people had all the power. And I saw that there was no one to comfort the people they hurt.

“You people will raise your arms to pray to me—but I will refuse to look at you. You people will say more and more prayers—but I will refuse to listen to you. Why? Because your hands are covered with blood.

“You poor city!\par Enemies came against you like storms.\par And no one comforted you.\par But I will build you again.\par I will use a beautiful mortar\par to lay the stones of your walls.\par I will use sapphire stones\par when I lay the foundation.\par

My own people have become like\par a dying animal surrounded by vultures.\par Those birds fly around her.\par Come on, wild animals.\par Come get something to eat.\par

“No person will feel sorry for you,\par city of Jerusalem.\par No person will be sad and cry for you.\par No person will go out of his way\par to even ask how you are!\par

“Important people and common people will die in the land of Judah. No person will bury those people or cry for them. No person will cut himself or shave his head to show sorrow for those people.

But I will give the order,’ this message is from the Lord, ‘to bring the Babylonian army back to Jerusalem. That army will fight against Jerusalem. They will capture it and set it on fire and burn it down. And I will destroy the cities in the land of Judah. Those cities will become empty deserts. No people will live there.’”

I hear a cry like a woman having a baby.\par It is a scream like a woman\par that is having her first baby.\par It is the cry of the Daughter of Zion. {\cf2\super [32]} \par She is lifting her hands in prayer, saying,\par “Oh! I am about to faint!\par Murderers are all around me!”\par

Shepherds come to Jerusalem,\par and they bring their flocks.\par They set up their tents all around her.\par Each shepherd takes care of his own flock.\par

God, I am very sad and afraid.\par

“I cry about all these things.\par My eyes, my eyes run down with water.\par There is no comforter near me.\par There is no person that can make me feel better.\par My children are like a wasteland.\par They are like that because the enemy won.”\par

I called out to my lovers.\par But they tricked me.\par My priests and my elders\par have died in the city.\par They were looking for food for themselves.\par They wanted to keep themselves alive.\par

She cries bitterly in the night.\par Her tears are on her cheeks.\par She has no one to comfort her.\par Many nations were friendly to her.\par But none of them comforts her now.\par All of her friends turned their backs on her.\par Her friends became her enemies.\par

“Listen to me, because I am groaning!\par I have no person to comfort me.\par All my enemies have heard of my trouble.\par They are happy.\par They are happy that you did this to me.\par You said there would be a time of punishment.\par You said you would punish my enemies.\par Now do what you said.\par Let my enemies be like I am now.\par

Jerusalem sinned very badly.\par Because Jerusalem sinned,\par she became a ruined city\par that people shake their heads about.\par In the past people respected her.\par Now those people hate her.\par They hate her because they abused her.\par Jerusalem groans.\par She turns away.\par

Jerusalem’s skirts became dirty.\par She didn’t think about the things\par that would happen to her.\par Her fall was amazing.\par She had no person to comfort her.\par She says,\par “Lord, see how I am hurt!\par See how my enemy thinks he is so great!”\par

People shouted,\par “Go away!\par Go away!\par Don’t touch us.”\par Those people wandered around\par and had no home.\par People in other nations said,\par “We don’t want them to live with us.”\par

“Son of man, {\cf2\super [279]} the family of Israel lived in their own country. But they made that land filthy by the bad things they did. To me, they were like a woman that becomes unclean {\cf2\super [280]} because of her monthly time of bleeding.

Israel was destroyed.\par \{Its people are scattered among the\} nations\par like some dish that was thrown away\par because no one wanted it.\par
