Then the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many men. Take the men down to the water, and I will test them for you there. If I say, ‘This man will go with you,’ he will go. But if I say, ‘That one will not go with you,’ then he will not go.”

After those things, God decided to test Abraham’s faith. God said to him, “Abraham!”

But God knows me.\par He is testing me and he will see\par that I am as pure as gold.\par

A king is not saved\par by his own great power.\par A strong soldier is not saved\par by his own great strength.\par

God tested us,\par like people test silver with fire.\par

Punish the bad people,\par and help the good people.\par God, you are good.\par And you can look into peoples’ hearts.\par

So Gideon led the men down to the water. At the water the Lord said to Gideon, “Separate the men like this: The men who drink the water by using their tongue to lap it up like a dog will be in one group. And the men who bend down to drink will be in the other group.”

Jonathan said to his young helper who carried his weapons, “Come on, let’s go to the camp of those foreigners. [129] Maybe the Lord will use us to defeat these people! Nothing can stop the Lord—it doesn’t matter if we have many soldiers or just a few soldiers.”

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Eliab is tall and handsome. But don’t think about things like that. God does not look at the things people see. People look only at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at his heart. Eliab is not the right man.”
