At the watering holes for the animals, we hear the music of cymbals. People sing about the victories of the Lord, the victories of his soldiers in Israel when the Lord’s people fought at the city gates {and won}!

The servant went to the water well outside the city. It was in the evening when the women come out to get water. The servant made the camels kneel down there.

Jacob looked, and he saw a well in the field. There were three flocks of sheep lying near the well. This well was the place where these sheep drank water. There was a large rock covering the mouth of the well.

When all the flocks gathered there, the shepherds rolled the rock away from the well. Then all the sheep could drink from the water. After the sheep were full, the shepherds put the rock back in its place.

“Those were the days\par when I went to the city gate\par and sat with the elders of the city\par in the public meeting place.\par

People will tell about\par the good things you do.\par People will sing about your goodness.\par

I will tell people how good you are.I will tell about the times you saved me.That has happenedtoo many times to count.

Get your water from the spring of salvation.\par Then you will be happy.\par

Then the Lord will give wisdom to the judges that rule his people. The Lord will give strength to the people in battles at the city gates.

Jeremiah, stand at the gate of the Lord’s house. Preach this message at the gate:

We have to buy the water that we drink.\par We have to pay for the wood that we use.\par

We risk our lives to get food.\par There are men in the desert with swords.\par

My people, remember the \{evil\} plans\par of Balak king of Moab.\par Remember what Balaam son of Beor\par said to Balak.\par Remember the things that happened\par from Acacia to Gilgal {\cf2\super [73]} .\par Remember those things and\par you will know the Lord is right!”\par

then you must bring them both out to the public place near the gate of that city, and you must kill them with stones. You must kill the man, because he used another man’s wife for sexual sin. And you must kill the girl, because she was in the city but did not call for help. You must remove that evil from your people.

He chooses the best part for himself. He takes the king’s share. The leaders of the people come to him. He does what the Lord says is good. He does what is right for the people of Israel.”

Every year the women of Israel remembered the daughter of Jephthah from Gilead. The women of Israel cried four days every year for Jephthah’s daughter.

God chose new {leaders} to fight at the city gates. [43] No one could find a shield or a spear among the 40,000 soldiers of Israel.

Now, stand there and I will tell you about the good things the Lord did for you and your ancestors.
