You said:\par ‘I am pure.\par I am innocent\par I did nothing wrong.\par I am not guilty!\par

If I sinned, you would be watching me,\par so you could punish me\par for doing wrong.\par

You know I am innocent,\par but no one can save me\par from your power!\par

Job, you say to God,\par ‘My arguments are right,\par and you can see I am pure.’\par

I am ready now to defend myself.\par I will carefully present my arguments.\par I know I will be shown to be right.\par

How many sins have I done?\par What have I done wrong?\par Show me my sins and my wrongs.\par

You would tie up my sins in a bag,\par seal it, \{and throw it away\}!\par

I was never cruel to anyone\par \{but these bad things happened to me\}.\par My prayers are right and pure.\par

Good people are upset about this.\par Innocent people are upset at people\par that don’t care about God.\par

But good people continue to live right.\par Innocent people will become stronger.\par

But God knows me.\par He is testing me and he will see\par that I am as pure as gold.\par

Right living was my clothing.\par Fairness was like my robe and turban. {\cf2\super [61]} \par

Then Job’s three friends gave up trying to answer Job. They gave up because Job was so sure that he himself was truly innocent.

“But Job, I heard what you said.\par

Job says,\par ‘I, Job, am innocent.\par And God is not fair to me.\par

I am innocent,\par but the judgment against me\par says that I am a liar.\par I am innocent,\par but I have been hurt very badly.’\par

“Job, it is not fair for you to say,\par ‘I am more right than God.’\par

Why don’t you just pardon me\par for doing wrong?\par Why don’t you just forgive me\par for my sins?\par Soon I will die and be in my grave.\par Then you will search for me,\par but I will be gone.”\par

God would just send storms to crush me.\par He would just give me more wounds\par for no reason.\par

I am innocent.\par But I don’t know what to think.\par I hate my own life.\par

When something terrible happens\par and an innocent person is killed,\par does God just laugh at him?\par

It doesn’t really change anything.\par The suffering still scares me!\par

But still, you say,\par ‘I am innocent.\par God is not angry with me.’\par So I will also judge you guilty \{of lying\}.\par Why? Because you say,\par ‘I have done nothing wrong.’\par
