When it is time to eat,\par I only sigh with sadness\par not with joy.\par My complaints pour out like water.\par

God, you never look away from me.\par You won’t leave me alone for a second.\par

My great sadness is my only food.\par My tears fall into my drinks.\par

God, I prayed to you again and again,\par but I did not talk \{about my secret sins\}.\par I only became weaker every time I prayed.\par

I hurt so much I can’t feel anything.\par My pounding heart makes me scream!\par

You have given tears as food to your people.\par You have given your people bowls\par filled with their tears.\par That was their water to drink.\par

We are all \{very sad\},\par making sad sounds like doves and bears.\par We are waiting for a time\par when people are fair.\par But there is no fairness yet.\par We are waiting to be saved,\par but salvation is still far away.\par

Even when I cry out and ask for help,\par the Lord does not listen to my prayer.\par

The Israelites met together at Mizpah. They got water and poured it out before the Lord. {In this way, they began a time of fasting.} They did not eat any food that day and they confessed their sins. They said, “We have sinned against the Lord.” So Samuel served as a judge [86] of Israel at Mizpah.
