And God said to people,\par “Fear and respect the Lord—\par that is wisdom.\par Don’t do evil things—\par that is understanding.”\par

So King Ahab told Obadiah to come to him. Obadiah was the man in charge of the king’s palace. [196] (Obadiah was a true follower of the Lord.

There was a man named Job that lived in the country of Uz. Job was a good and faithful man. Job worshiped God and refused to do evil things.

“But where can a person find wisdom?\par Where can we go to find understanding?\par

“So, where does wisdom come from?\par Where can we find understanding?\par

At that time God saw wisdom\par and thought about it.\par God saw how much wisdom was worth.\par And God approved of wisdom.\par

Wisdom begins with fear and respect\par for God.\par People who obey God are very wise.\par Praises will be sung to God forever.\par

Stop doing bad things!\par Do good things.\par Work for peace.\par Run after peace until you catch it.\par

God will discipline those people.\par God will teach people what they should do.\par

The first thing a person must learn is to respect and obey the Lord—that leads to true wisdom. But evil people hate discipline and true wisdom.

The teachings of a wise person give life. Those words will help you in times of trouble.

A wise man respects the Lord and stays away from evil. But a foolish man does things without thinking—he is not careful.

Good people live their lives trying to stay away from evil. The person who is careful with his life, is guarding his soul.

True love and loyalty will make you pure. {\cf2\super [21]} Respect the Lord, and you will stay far away from evil.

Don’t depend on your own wisdom. But respect the Lord and stay away from evil.

If a person respects the Lord,\par then that person will hate evil.\par I (Wisdom) hate pride\par and people who think they are better\par than other people.\par I hate evil ways, and a lying mouth.\par

Respect for the Lord is the first step toward getting wisdom. Getting knowledge of the Lord is the first step toward getting understanding.

“Wash yourselves. Make yourselves clean. Stop doing the bad things you do. I don’t want to see those bad things. Stop doing wrong!

“There are some things that the Lord our God has kept secret. Only he knows those things. But the Lord told us about some things. And those teachings are for us and our descendants [195] forever! And we must obey all the commands in that law.

Obey these laws carefully. This will show the people of the other nations that you are wise and understanding. The people of those nations will hear about these laws. Then they will say, ‘Truly, the people of this great nation (Israel) are wise and understanding.’

But God’s strong foundation {\cf2\super [14]} continues to be the same. These words are written on that foundation: “The Lord knows those people who belong to him.” {\cf2\super [15]} Also, these words are written on that foundation: “Every person who says that he believes in the Lord must stop doing wrong.”

That person must stop doing evil\par and do good;\par that person should look for peace\par and try to get it.\par
