I will let those people beat me. I will let them pull the hair from my beard. I will not hide my face when they say bad things to me and spit at me.

So I told those men that they were wrong. I said bad things to them. I hit some of those men, and I pulled out their hair. I forced them to make a promise in God’s name. I said to them, “You must not marry the daughters of those people. Don’t let the daughters of those foreign people marry your sons. And don’t let your daughters marry the sons of those foreign people.

People have crowded around me.\par They make fun of me and slap my face.\par

Those young men hate me,\par they stand away from me,\par they think they are better than me.\par They even spit in my face!\par

They beat me until I had deep cuts\par in my back.\par I had long and deep wounds.\par

My face is covered with shame.\par I carry this shame for you.\par

My brothers treat me like a stranger.\par My mother’s sons treat me like a foreigner.\par

But he was given pain to suffer for the wrong things we did. He was crushed for our guilt. A debt we owed—our punishment—was given to him. We were healed (forgiven) because of his pain.

He was hurt and punished. But he never protested. He said nothing—like a sheep being taken to be killed. He was like a lamb that makes no sound when someone cuts off its wool. He never opened his mouth \{to defend himself\}.

That person should turn his cheek\par to the one that hits him.\par That person should let people insult him.\par

Now, strong city, {\cf2\super [59]} gather your soldiers.\par They are surrounding us for the attack!\par They will hit the Judge of Israel\par on the cheek with their stick.\par

The Lord answered Moses, “If her father spit in her face, then she would be shamed for seven days. So put her outside the camp for seven days. After that time, she {will become well}. Then she can come back into the camp.”

Then they spit in Jesus’ face. And they hit him with their fists. Other people slapped Jesus.

Then Pilate freed Barabbas. Pilate told some soldiers to beat Jesus with whips. Then Pilate gave Jesus to the soldiers to be killed on a cross.

The soldiers spit on Jesus. Then they took his stick and hit him on the head many times.

But I tell you, don’t stand against an evil person. If someone hits you on the right cheek, then turn and let him hit the other cheek too.

Some of the people there spit at Jesus. They covered Jesus’ eyes and hit him with their fists. They said, “Be a prophet {\cf2\super [221]} and tell us who hit you!” Then the guards led Jesus away and beat him.

The soldiers hit Jesus on the head many times with a stick. They also spit on him. Then \{they teased Jesus by\} bowing on their knees and worshiping him.

When Jesus said this, one of the guards standing there hit him. The guard said, “You should not talk to the high priest {\cf2\super [234]} like that!”

We should always follow the example of Jesus. Jesus is the leader in our faith. And he makes our faith perfect. He suffered death on the cross. But Jesus accepted the shame of the cross like it was nothing. He did this because of the joy that God put before him. And now he is sitting at the right side of God’s throne.
