“So Babylon, sit there and be quiet.\par Daughter of the Chaldeans, {\cf2\super [411]} \par go into the darkness.\par Why? Because you will no longer be\par ‘The Queen of the Kingdoms.’\par
The Lord said, “I will change Babylon. That place will be for animals, {\cf2\super [152]} \{not people\}. That place will be a swamp. I will use the ‘broom of destruction’ to sweep Babylon away.” The Lord All-Powerful said those things.
You people living near the sea should stop and be sad. Tyre was the “Merchant {\cf2\super [221]} of Sidon.” That city by the sea sent businessmen across the seas, and those men filled you with riches.
“Fall down in the dirt\par and sit there!\par Virgin daughter of the Chaldeans, {\cf2\super [409]} \par sit on the ground!\par You are not the ruler now!\par People will not think that you are\par a tender, delicate young lady anymore.\par
You said,\par ‘I will live forever.\par I will always be The Queen.’\par You didn’t even notice the bad things\par you did to those people.\par You didn’t think about what would happen.\par
I will bring an end to the sounds of joy and happiness in those places. There will be no more happy sounds of the brides and bridegrooms. I will take away the sound of people grinding meal. I will take away the light of the lamp.
“Why are we just sitting here?\par Come, let’s run to the strong cities.\par If the Lord our God is going to make us die,\par then let’s die there.\par We have sinned against the Lord,\par so God gave us poisoned water to drink.\par
Jerusalem once was a city full of people.\par But now the city is so deserted!\par Jerusalem was one of the greatest cities\par in the world.\par But now she {\cf2\super [1]} has become like a widow.\par She was once a princess among cities.\par But now she has been made a slave.\par
The elders of Zion {\cf2\super [16]} sit on the ground.\par They sit on the ground and are quiet.\par They pour dust on their heads.\par They put on sackcloth. {\cf2\super [17]} \par The young women of Jerusalem\par bow their heads to the ground in sorrow.\par
She (Babylon) gave herself much glory\par and rich living.\par Give her that much suffering and sadness.\par She says to herself, ‘I am a queen\par sitting \{on my throne\}.\par I am not a widow {\cf2\super [131]} ;\par I will never be sad.’\par
The Lord protects his holy people.
He keeps them from stumbling.
But bad people will be destroyed.
They will fall in the darkness.
Their power will not help them win.
