I do these things for my servant, Jacob.\par I do these things for my chosen people, Israel.\par \{Cyrus,\} I am calling you by name.\par You don’t know me,\par but I am calling you by name.\par
The Lord, the Holy One of Israel, saves you. And the Lord says, “I will send armies to Babylon for you. Many people will be captured. Those people, the Chaldeans, will be taken away in their own boats. (The Chaldeans are very proud of those boats.)
The Lord says to Cyrus, {\cf2\super [398]} \par “You are my shepherd.\par You will do the things I want.\par You will say to Jerusalem,\par ‘You will be built again!’\par You will tell the temple, {\cf2\super [399]} \par ‘Your foundations will be built again!’”\par
But God has decided to make that terrible time short. If that time were not made short, then no person would continue living. But God will make that time short to help the people he has chosen.
But God has decided to make that terrible time short. If that time were not made short, then no person could continue living. But God will make that time short to help his special people that he has chosen.
I was going through your city and I saw the things you worship. I found an altar that had these words written on it: ‘TO the god who is not known.’ You worship a god that you don’t know. This is the God I am telling you about!
So this is what has happened: The people of Israel (the Jews) tried \{to be right with God\}. But they did not succeed. But the people God chose did \{become right with him\}. The other people became hard and refused to listen to God.
\{Yes, I feel sorry for the Jewish people.\} I don’t mean that God failed to keep his promise to them. But only some of the people of Israel (the Jews) are truly God’s people. {\cf2\super [77]}
Remember that in the past you were without Christ. You were not citizens of Israel. {\cf2\super [11]} And you did not have the agreements {\cf2\super [12]} with the promise \{that God made to his people\}. You had no hope, and you did not know God.
