Isaiah 11:1

Easy To Read Version

A small tree (child) will begin to grow from the stump (family) of Jesse. {\cf2\super [133]} That branch will grow from Jesse’s roots.

The God of Israel spoke. The Rock of Israel said to me, “The person who rules people fairly, the person who rules with respect for God,

Boaz was Obed’s father. Obed was Jesse’s father.

They tell how great your kingdom is.\par They tell how great you are.\par

At that time, there will be a special person from Jesse’s {\cf2\super [135]} family. This person will be like a flag. This “flag” will show all the nations that they should come together around him. The nations will ask him the things they should do. And the place where he is will be filled with glory.

At that time, the Lord’s plant (Judah) will be very beautiful and great. The people still living in Israel will be very proud of the things the land grows.

He grew up like a small plant before the Lord. He was like a root growing in dry ground. He did not look special. He had no special glory. If we looked at him, we would see nothing special that would cause us to like him.

But a tenth of the people will be allowed to stay in the land. These people will return \{to the Lord\} even though they were to be destroyed. These people will be like an oak tree. When the tree is chopped down, a stump is left. This stump (the people remaining) is a very special seed.

This will happen when the special child is born. God will give a son to us. This son will be responsible for leading the people. His name will be “Wonderful Counselor, Powerful God, Father Who Lives Forever, Prince of Peace.”

Power and peace will be in his kingdom. It will continue to grow for this king from David’s family. This king will use goodness and fair judgment to rule the kingdom forever and ever.

This message is from the Lord,\par “The time is coming,”\par “when I will raise up a good ‘sprout.’ {\cf2\super [181]} \par He will be a king\par who will rule in a wise way.\par He will do what is fair and right\par in the land.\par

At that time, I will make a good ‘branch’ grow from David’s family. That good ‘branch’ will do the things that are good and right for the country.

The Lord my Master said these things:

They will live on the land that I gave to my servant Jacob. Your ancestors {\cf2\super [297]} lived in that place. And my people will live there. They and their children, and their grandchildren will live there forever. And David my servant will be their leader forever.

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,\par are the smallest town in Judah.\par Your family is almost too small to count.\par But the “Ruler of Israel”\par will come from you for me.\par His beginnings {\cf2\super [60]} are from ancient times,\par from long, long ago.\par

Listen to me High Priest Joshua and\par your fellow priests seated before you.\par These men are examples\par that show what will happen\par when I bring my special servant.\par He is called, THE BRANCH.\par

The Lord All-Powerful says these things:\par ‘There is a man called THE BRANCH.\par He will grow strong,\par and he will build the Lord’s temple.\par

This is the family history of Jesus Christ. He came from the family of David {\cf2\super [1]} and Abraham. {\cf2\super [2]}

It is clear that our Lord (Christ) came from the family group of Judah. And Moses {\cf2\super [67]} said nothing about priests belonging to that family group.

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to tell you these things for the churches (groups of believers). I am the descendant {\cf2\super [176]} from the family of David. {\cf2\super [177]} I am the bright morning star.”

But one of the elders {\cf2\super [38]} said to me, “Don’t cry! The Lion (Christ) from Judah’s family group has won the victory. He is David’s {\cf2\super [39]} descendant. {\cf2\super [40]} He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

The neighbors gave the boy his name. These women said, “Naomi has a son now!” [37] And they named him Obed. Obed was Jesse’s father. And Jesse was the father of {King} David.

Saul asked him, “Young man, who is your father?”
