But the people in Gilead {\cf2\super [138]} have sinned. There are many terrible idols in that place. The people offer sacrifices to bulls at Gilgal. Those people have many altars. {\cf2\super [139]} There are rows and rows of altars—like the rows of dirt in a plowed field.

Elijah was a prophet from the town of Tishbe in Gilead. Elijah said to King Ahab, “I serve the Lord God of Israel. By his power, I promise that no dew or rain will fall during the next few years. The rain will fall only if I command it to fall.”

The Lord used every prophet and every seer [205] to warn Israel and Judah. The Lord said, “Turn away from the evil things you do! Obey my commands and laws. Follow all the Law that I gave to your ancestors. [206] I used my servants the prophets to give this law to you.”

Those idols are worth nothing.\par They are something to make fun of.\par In the time of judgment,\par those idols will be destroyed.\par

All the people of the other nations are stupid and foolish.\par Their teachings come from worthless wooden statues.\par

“Judah, a long time ago you threw off\par your yoke.\par You broke the ropes\par \{that I used to control you\}.\par You said to me,\par ‘I will not serve you!’\par You were like a prostitute\par on every high hill\par and under every green tree. {\cf2\super [11]} \par

Let those idols come and save you!\par Where are the idols\par that you have made for yourselves?\par Let’s see if those idols come\par and save you when you are in trouble.\par Judah, you have as many idols as cities!\par

“Son of man, {\cf2\super [132]} tell this story to the family of Israel. Ask them what it means.

Israel is like a vine that grows plenty of fruit.\par But as Israel got more and more \{things\}\par he built more and more altars\par \{to honor false gods\}.\par His land became better and better,\par so he put up better and better stones\par \{to honor false gods\}.\par

The people of Israel tried to trick God.\par But now they must accept their guilt.\par The Lord will break down their altars. {\cf2\super [98]} \par He will destroy their memorial stones. {\cf2\super [99]} \par

“Israel, you act like a prostitute. {\cf2\super [44]} But don’t let Judah be guilty. Don’t go to Gilgal {\cf2\super [45]} or go up to Beth-aven. {\cf2\super [46]} Don’t use the Lord’s name to make promises. Don’t say, ‘As the Lord lives …!’

Gilead {\cf2\super [66]} is a city of people that do evil.\par People have tricked and killed other people.\par

Ephraim {\cf2\super [80]} built more and more altars, {\cf2\super [81]} \par and that was a sin.\par They have been altars of sin for Ephraim.\par

All their evil is in Gilgal; {\cf2\super [96]} \par I began hating them there.\par I will force them to leave my house,\par because of the evil things they do.\par I will not love them any more.\par Their leaders are rebels—\par \{they have turned against me\}.\par

“Go to Bethel and sin! Go to Gilgal {\cf2\super [51]} and sin even more. Offer your sacrifices in the morning. Bring a tenth of your crops for the three-day holiday.

But don’t look in Bethel. {\cf2\super [60]} \par Don’t go to Gilgal. {\cf2\super [61]} \par Don’t cross the border\par and go down to Beersheba. {\cf2\super [62]} \par The people of Gilgal will be taken away\par as prisoners. {\cf2\super [63]} \par And Bethel will be destroyed. {\cf2\super [64]} \par

“Some people worship useless idols.\par But those statues never help them. {\cf2\super [12]} \par

God said, “Listen to me! You will have prophets. [168] I, the Lord, will show myself to them in visions. [169] I will speak to them in dreams.
